First Apple DC store design finally approved....but

Apple finally managed to get a design for their first store in DC approved by U.S. Fine Arts Commission’s Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) AND the Old Georgetown Board (OGB). Many of us have dealt with committees and I guess there's no need to elaborate on how it goes. Apple purchased this site, an existing red brick building in Georgetown, back in 2007 and have been dealing with these 2 committees since then. The fifth design option that was finally approved is essentially a compromise and BLAH in my opinion! take a look yourself:

Here's the existing building:

And this is the approved option:

Option three and my favourite that was rejected by the OGB. why?

..and finally an ode to apple at 5th ave NY (image from apple website).
There's something about a glass box (or a pyramid) in an old setting! Don't you think so?

Look at all the options and read more here

true- the approved design does go well with the surrounding buildings- though I'm surprised how the existing building (on top) was approved! it doesn't look historic and I can certainly understand why sustainability (and hence adaptive reuse) went out the window in this case. I've always been fascinated by urban infill design issues. I think we should have a separate gallery of such projects- though I'm pretty biased in favor of transparency. look at the Apple Boston store:

Apple interiors are always very basic as far as product display is concerned.

This is very exciting to finally have an apple store in DC. Although it seems they needed to maintain the Georgetown Historic feel on the exterior, I hope they do something interesting with the interior, rather than letting it look exactly like some of their stores you can find in any mall. Do you know when construction is scheduled to start or when the store is supposed to open?
