A Great Architect whose work is not known far and wide by present generation.A legend in his life time for people who have known him and his work,used to work personally at work sites as he loved his work dearly.He should be counted as an architect who practiced green architecture.The one and only...I thank Girish Parmar for bringing his work to light.

one very nice website you did create....very informative....it has the most information one should know about the architect Nari gandhi...

but can you please let the viewrs enlarge the photos of plan and elevation of the houses done by the architect....because we will also like to study those plans... :)

Nari Gandhi 1934-1993

Nariman Dosabhai Gandhi was born in parsi family on 2nd january 1934 surat (Gujarat) INDIA.
His father Dosabhai Gandhi was a railway employeer & mother nazamama was a housewife
Dosabhai Gandhi & nazamma shifted in Mumbai with his 4 soons & 2 daughters in Dadar Parsi colony.
Enveloped by this cloistered surrounding, Gandhi grew up to be a typical parsi; the way in which he spoke, his mannerisms & his idiosyncrasies never ceased to remind of this face, & he was often butt of parsi jokes.
As a young man, he studied architecture at the Sir J.J College of Architecture in Mumbai after which he went to America. He joined Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin Foundation & it was the six years that he spent there which afforded him his creative exercise. His two years study of pottery at Kent was what taught him the proximity that architecture has with plastic art; a fact which is visible in his work of architecture which is plastic, spontaneous & displays a love for material which at times culminates into a state of obsession.
Back in India in the mid-sixties, at a time when modern architecture, indigenously produced, was at a foetal stage, Nari did not practice much architecture but has taught briefly. It was few years later that his first city home was built until which time he had worked & completed a few interior projects. In the next two decades Nari built many houses; each one a millstone of not only the development of a unique style but also his personal evolution.
It was his honesty that was exemplified in the use of materials & composition of space: his works were proverbially utopian in that they symbolized a marriage of material & structure; & stemmed from sensitivity to space & form: an interlacing of these two aspects reveals itself in a few basic components used in his houses. He used these components to weave the houses together, & because they became an extension of him, he actually called them his children.
Nari Gandhi was working on, besides a number of private residences, a school I Bihar, one of his largest & most complex architectural works. On the 18th of August, 1993 Nari Gandhi met with a tragic end car accident near Khopoli, while on his was to Ahemadnagar…………………………………….. Iab-94
