BIM or Building Information Modeling is the digital representation of a physical building. Unlike 2D drawings or a 3D model, BIM incorporates information that could be used during planning, design, construction and the entire life cycle of a building. BIM is not just for Architects and Engineers- it's a great tool for building owners, contractors and facility managers.

A few commercially available BIM softwares and tools:

ArchiCAD

Bentley BIM

Revit

Vectorworks

Navisworks

Sketchup BIM tools

Ecotect Analysis

FM:Interact

Bentley Facilities

Importing Revit 2013 gbXML into Ecotect Analysis 2011

When you import gbXML files from Revit 2013 into Ecotect Analysis, you may receive the following error message:

Ecotect-gbXML Error-1

This error is being presented because the gbXML export file that Revit 2013 produces is not encoded in a format Ecotect recognizes (and for some reason triggers this somewhat misleading IFC error message).

Unlike earlier versions, Revit 2013 exports gbXML files in the UTF-16 format, whereas Ecotect expects UTF-8.

The simplest way to fix this problem is to open the gbXML file in Windows Notepad and Save As to create a new file, changing the format (in the Encoding pull-down menu) to UTF-8.

Ecotect-gbXML Error-2
The gbXML should then import without problem.

Thank you to the folks at BIM Toolbox (http://autodesk.typepad.com/bimtoolbox/) for finding and posting this solution!

Modeling Greywater Systems in Revit MEP

Techniques for Modeling Greywater Systems and Tracking LEED Points

Revit MEP makes it easy to model greywater systems as part of your strategy for improving sustainable design and LEED certification.  You can get started by following the steps outlined in this video tutorial posted by AutodeskMEPTechs.

Although this tutorial features Revit MEP 2009, the techniques and strategies illustrated are still applicable in Revit MEP 2012.

You can view the complete series of excellent videos focussing on AutoCAD and Revit MEP at the AutodeskMEPTechs YouTube channel.
